What is occupational medicine?
Occupational medicine, or “occ-med,” is the prevention, diagnosis
and treatment of diseases and injuries associated with work. Its principal
role is the provision of health advice to organizations and individuals
to ensure that the highest standards of health and safety at work can
be achieved and maintained. Occupational physicians must have a wide
knowledge of clinical medicine and be competent in a number of important
areas. In today's workplace, occupational disorders are more likely
to be insidious and may elude easy diagnosis by a primary care physician.
In the last 100 years, over 100,000 different chemicals with undefined
human health risks were introduced into industrial trades, and health
hazards clearly remain.
